GLOVERSVILLE - At age 16 most of us would have found it a considerable chore to paint a house, put up drywall, install flooring or build a wheelchair ramp.
But those are responsibilities kids like Charles Morris and Bekah Sargent took on willingly, as they paid $400 each plus travel expenses to spend a week in the Johnstown area helping folks they don't even know.
"I've done Reach for about four years now," Morris said. "I like meeting new people, learning some new skills."
"I like painting and scraping's fun. I like ladders," Sargent said.
This is a Christian based organization called Reach Workcamps.
202 kids from 6 states and one Canadian province. 9 different church denominations. After a day at the worksite they rough it at a local junior high school, supervised by 45 adults. People like Edwin Kim from Philadelphia.
"I'm actually in accounting and this is just a side thing that I really enjoy doing," Kim said.
The Reach group has been doing these house fix-ups at no charge to the homeowners since 1992.
Heather Moulton started as a camper. Now she's the director.
"I think scripture is very clear that this is his people," Moulton said. "This is his earth and we're called to take care of it and to love one another as he's loved us."
The Reach volunteers will be working in Fulton County at 19 houses through Saturday.
