Expect the unexpected

If your a reality tv fan then that phrase will ring true with you.
With life you never really know what's around the next corner do we?
You set your hopes and dreams on one path then you find that you are facing a fork in the road.
Which way do you turn now?
What if the path you want is covered by trees and isn't safe?
Do you follow your path or take a different route?

If you remember giggles slipped off some playground equipment and broke her tibia on the very first day of summer vacation.
Six long weeks later it appeared like we were finally going to close the chapter on this part of our summer.
We spoke about trips to the playground, bubble baths and swimming lessons.
Just for comparison sake.
This x-ray was taken the day of her accident.

Somehow we expected that she would only be spending 6 weeks in a cast so in a way we were "counting down" till our summer really would begin.
Bright and early Tuesday morning big daddy took our overly excited daughter to the hospital for cast removal. We were so confident that she wasn't going to go back in a cast we filled up the wading pool and let her splash and play the afternoon before.
(not recommended as it was still wet when they removed the cast)
They cut open her cast but tied it shut then sent her off for x-rays.
This was 6 weeks after the initial break.

I know, your wondering why her x-ray looks "wrong" too aren't you.
I did at first.
For six weeks hidden in a klunky cast I didn't expect her leg to look well, like it was still broken.
But it is still broken.
If the doctor had of put in pins and plates she would be healed by now.
But she didn't so she is Not.quite.healed.
Six more weeks but this time she was upgraded to an air cast.
We were also told to change our thinking regarding healing times.
With a fracture like hers it could take six months to fully heal.

So, I guess it's six weeks at a time.
we will take her again to get rechecked the 17th of September and we won't know until after they x-ray if she has seen the last of her cast or not.
Which means first day of school she will be rocking her cast and all her little friends will swarm her!

As one of my friends put it " she'll have a story like no on else!
While all her friends we're at summer camp she learned to drive a wheelchair, walk with a walker, scoot on her bum and had her family wait on her hand and foot all before being eligible for a pension!"

This wasn't the path we thought we were on so for now it looks like we will follow a different. One I hope will loop us back sooner than we expected.

Have you ever found yourself on the wrong path?
How did you "right" the situation and what treasures did you save from the unexpected journey?

regardless of what happens and how long she spends in a cast I can say this.
The summer of 2012 won't be soon forget that's for sure!
